John McCain is asked why he voted against a law creating a national MLK holiday in 1983. He responds "I changed my view a very short time after," which is not even remotely the truth.. unless by "short time" he meant "11 years."

John McCain opposed a state MLK holiday in 1987, a new MLK Federal holiday in 1989, and funding for commission encouraging recognition of a holiday in 1994.

From JedReport:

Last fall, John McCain said that he wanted a Christian to be president because he felt that the Christian faith was a better guide than other faiths. He also said that his faith was an important part of his qualification to lead, adding that the United States Constitution established America as a Christian nation.

Leave aside for the moment whether John McCain's religious bigotry is acceptable in modern America.

Instead, ask yourself what the media would have done if Jeremiah Wright had uttered those words, especially if he had been talking about race instead of religion?

During a town hall meeting in Cedar Falls Iowa on Friday, McCain used the racist phrase “tar baby” in response to a question about equal access in children in divorce cases. Later in the day he offered an apology when questioned by the media on his use of the phrase: “I don’t think I should have used that word and it was wrong to do so.”

Organizers of a recall drive in Arizona oppose McCain’s continued support of the Iraq war and for being complicit in the erosion of civil liberties associated with the war on terror. The recall was filed Tuesday by Americans for Integrity and Justice who stated: “… right now he seems to be just representing himself, he’s got tunnel-vision for the presidency.”

John in DC over at AmericaBlog writes about the importance of journalistic ethics in exposing hypocrisy among Presidential candidates. “The [Washington] Post has a front page story today, entitled ‘McCain Taps Cash He Sought To Limit: Onetime Reformer Calls on Big Donors,’ eviscerating John McCain for being a hypocrite on campaign finance issues. The problem? …

Journalist Jeff Jarvis recently blogged about the power of projects such as The Real McCain and spoke about it on CNN last night. He mentions how blogger Ken Layne famously warned media that “we can check your ass,” and now with sites like The Real McCain, politicians are warned that “their asses are getting fact-checked too.”
